ONE: the article gives the year as 2006, not 2010 or 2011. Verbatim: By 2006, Makhlouf was controlling around 7% of Syria's GDP, said the former official, but his role in economic decision-making was much greater than that. TWO: US$62 BILLION DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE ARTICLE. Searched the full text for 62 billion and for 2010; neither occurs. The GDP figure attached to Hamidi's 7 per cent came from somewhere else and travelled as his, which is this chapter's own subject. THREE: the source is a FORMER economic official, unnamed and untitled, not a regime official. FOUR: the quoted words are MUCH greater than that, not far greater.
