IT IS AN OPINION COLUMN, NOT A NEWS REPORT, and the register said so nowhere because no row existed. It appears under 'More Opinion from The National'; the byline is Robin Mills, described on the page as 'chief executive of Qamar Energy, and author of The Myth of the Oil Crisis'. Updated 06 July 2026, 3:13 AM. So it is a named energy analyst writing in a newspaper, which is a different thing from the newspaper reporting a finding. WHAT IT SAYS, VERBATIM, AND WHAT IT ATTRIBUTES. 'The Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency began reporting Syria's off-grid solar capacity in 2022, standing at 249 megawatts. It reached 931MW in 2023, 1,500MW in 2024, and 2,060MW last year.' THE SERIES IS EXPRESSLY IRENA'S and it is confirmed at IRENA's own page at SRC-314. 'Renewable power by then made up a third of national generating capacity, outstripped in the region only by Lebanon and Jordan.' NOT taken: it is unattributed and it cannot be reconciled with SRC-316's 15 per cent without knowing which capacity denominator is meant. 'A quarter of Syrian households have some kind of solar power.' UNATTRIBUTED. 'Traditional large-scale on-grid installations, of the type made famous by sites such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park in Dubai, reached just 189MW in Syria by 2025.' UNATTRIBUTED, and it is reproduced exactly by subtracting IRENA's off-grid solar from IRENA's total solar; see SRC-314. 'The national network provides at best about four hours of electricity per day.' UNATTRIBUTED and in the author's own voice. 'Electricity generation, which reached about 45 terawatt-hours in 2010, tumbled to under 20TWh by 2015 and did not recover.' UNATTRIBUTED. Note it does not agree with SRC-312's 'nearly 49,000 GWh before the conflict'. 'A basic household set-up of 1.5 to 3 kilowatts costs from $2,500 to $4,500. This is still expensive in a country with per-person income estimated at about $800.' UNATTRIBUTED. IT FALSIFIES TWO LIMBS OF AN ATTRIBUTION IN THE SOURCE MANUSCRIPT, AND THE WHOLE ARTICLE WAS SEARCHED BEFORE THIS WAS RECORDED. Source Chapter 6 line 1873 and source Chapter 5 line 1645 both attribute to 'The National's account of July 2026' that Syrians bought these systems 'with no formal financing mechanism available to them and in a market flooded with counterfeit equipment'.
