  1. RETRIEVED AND READ AT THE DATA, 22 AUGUST 2026. THIS RETRIEVAL DID NOT EXIST WHEN THE GATE WAS WRITTEN; it was created by SRC-323, which revealed that the 7.4 million cubic metre figure the source manuscript attributes to Karam Shaar Advisory is in fact the Energy Institute's. IT IS NOW TRACED TO THE BOTTOM AND THE CHAIN HAS THREE LINKS. The sheet is headed 'Natural Gas: Production*' in units of 'Billion cubic metres', years from 1970. THE SYRIA ROW, VERBATIM AS PARSED: 2015 4.0528; 2016 3.5344; 2017 3.4873; 2018 3.4684; 2019 3.3270; 2020 2.9217; 2021 3.1102; 2022 2.5447; 2023 2.5994; 2024 2.7230. THE PUBLISHED FIGURE IS ANNUAL AND THE FIGURE IN CIRCULATION IS DAILY. 2.723 billion cubic metres divided by 365 is 7.46 million cubic metres a day. So the chain runs: source manuscript prints 'about 7.4 million cubic metres a day' and attributes it to Karam Shaar Advisory's 2025 sector assessment; Karam Shaar Advisory at SRC-323 prints 7.4 million cmd and attributes it to the Energy Institute; the Energy Institute publishes 2.723 BILLION CUBIC METRES A YEAR. THE DAILY FIGURE IS SOMEBODY'S DIVISION AND NO PUBLISHER STATES IT. THE PUBLISHER'S OWN NOTE MAKES THIS THE CLEANEST INSTANCE OF THIS BOOK'S SUBJECT IN THE WHOLE CHAPTER, AND IT IS AT THE FOOT OF THE SHEET. VERBATIM: 'Notes: As far as possible, the data above represents standard cubic metres (measured at 15oC and 1013 mbar); as they are derived directly from measures of energy content using an average conversion factor and have been standardized using a Gross Calorific Value (GCV) of 40 MJ/m3, THEY DO NOT NECESSARILY EQUATE WITH GAS VOLUMES EXPRESSED IN SPECIFIC NATIONAL TERMS.' SO THE ENERGY INSTITUTE'S CUBIC METRES ARE ENERGY-DERIVED AND CALORIFICALLY STANDARDISED, AND THE PUBLISHER SAYS IN TERMS THAT THEY DO NOT NECESSARILY EQUATE WITH NATIONALLY STATED VOLUMES. The Syrian caretaker minister's 8 million cubic metres a day at SRC-323 is a nationally stated volume. Setting 7.4 against 8 as rival estimates of one quantity therefore compares two different units of measurement, on top of comparing two different years and two different geographies. The publisher warns against precisely that comparison and the warning is in the source the figure comes from. A SECOND POINT THE SERIES MAKES AND THE MANUSCRIPT'S FRAMING MISSES: production has NOT fallen continuously. It fell from 4.05 billion cubic metres in 2015 to 2.54 in 2022 and has RISEN since, to 2.60 in 2023 and 2.72 in 2024. A sentence saying Syrian gas production fell sharply to 2024 is wrong on this series; it fell sharply to 2022 and has recovered slightly. 'Annual changes and shares of total are calculated using billion cubic metres figures. Growth rates are adjusted for leap years.' STATUS READ_IN_PART: the gas production sheet in billion cubic metres is read in full for Syria, with the units, the header and the notes. The ninety-nine other sheets, including oil production, electricity generation and the bcf and exajoule variants of this same sheet, are NOT read. The 2025 edition covers full-year 2024 data and was published on 26 June 2025; the workbook served from the downloads page is the current one and its own edition year was not separately verified on its face, which is a gap in this row.
  2. FURTHER SHEETS READ, 22 AUGUST 2026, AND THEY PRODUCE TWO FINDINGS. FIRST, THE OIL SERIES, AND IT IS THE LOWEST FIGURE IN CIRCULATION. Sheet 'Oil Production - barrels', units 'Thousand barrels daily', row Syria: 2019 33.6, 2020 43.0, 2021 43.5, 2022 42.8, 2023 40.0, 2024 34.9. SO THE ENERGY INSTITUTE PUTS SYRIAN OIL PRODUCTION AT ABOUT 34,900 BARRELS A DAY IN 2024. Set that against the figures already in this project: the source manuscript's 'around 90,000 barrels a day' for 2024 of which about 8,000 from government-held areas; the World Bank's 54,200 for 2024 rising to 75,200 in 2025, used for the flaring ratio; the Washington Institute's 'around 90,000 bpd' in August 2025 at SRC-337; the energy minister's 100,000 in December 2025 and his own 'less than a quarter' of 150,000 in February 2026, which is about 37,500; and the Syrian Petroleum Company's 130,000 barrels in July 2026 at SRC-361. SIX FIGURES, AND THE LOWEST IS FROM THE SAME PUBLICATION THE MANUSCRIPT LEANS ON FOR GAS THROUGH KARAM SHAAR ADVISORY. The manuscript's own line that the published answers do not agree, and not by a little, is understated. Note the unit trap: this sheet is THOUSAND BARRELS DAILY and the gas sheet is BILLION CUBIC METRES A YEAR, so one is already a daily rate and the other is not. SECOND, AND IT IS A SCOPED ABSENCE WITH THE SCOPE STATED. SYRIA IS NOT A NAMED ROW ON THE ELECTRICITY SHEETS. Four sheets were checked cell by cell for a Syrian row: 'Electricity Generation - TWh', 'Solar Generation - TWh', 'Solar Installed Capacity' and 'Renewable Power (inc hydro)-TWh'. NONE CARRIES A SYRIA ROW. Each carries 'Other Middle East', and each names some regional neighbours: Turkey, Iraq and Israel on three of them, Turkey, Israel and Jordan on the capacity sheet. SO THE STANDARD GLOBAL ENERGY STATISTICAL REFERENCE NAMES SYRIA FOR OIL AND GAS PRODUCTION AND DOES NOT NAME IT FOR ELECTRICITY AT ALL; the country is absorbed into a residual regional aggregate. A country whose electricity crisis is its defining economic fact is not a row in the world's most used energy dataset, while its hydrocarbons are. That is this chapter's subject stated by the omission itself. SCOPE OF THAT ABSENCE, STATED BECAUSE AN ABSENCE IS ONLY AS WIDE AS THE SEARCH: four named sheets were checked. The other ninety-six sheets of this workbook were NOT checked for a Syrian electricity row, and no claim is made about them. The claim supported is that Syria is not a named row on those four sheets and appears within 'Other Middle East'.
